What does Wauseon TubeTech service cover?

Everything between the machine running well and the machine running again. Phone and remote troubleshooting, on-site service, preventive and scheduled maintenance, tooling troubleshooting, breakdown repair, and full repair and rebuild at our facility in Wauseon, Ohio. Tube end forming, end finishing, and cutoff equipment, including machines we did not build.

What makes it different is who answers. The people troubleshooting your machine are the people who design these machines and develop the forming tooling that runs in them. There is no layer between you and the person who knows why the form stopped holding.

Common Problems We Get Called About

If you are looking at one of these right now, the short version is that the symptom is rarely where the problem is. Here is what we usually find:

The tooling is slipping or the tube is moving under the ram

Almost always clamp force, die condition, or lubrication rather than the forming tooling itself. Polished or worn clamp dies, low clamp pressure, a contaminated tube surface, or a wall thickness change in the incoming tube will all let the tube move. Replacing the form tooling when the clamp dies are worn buys you a few weeks.

The servo is faulting or losing position

On an electric servo machine, repeated faults usually mean the drive is seeing a load it should not. A mechanical bind, a misaligned tooling stack, a clamp not fully seating, or a form progression asking one hit to move too much material. The drive is the symptom more often than the cause, which is why we ask about the part before we quote a motor.

The form has drifted out of tolerance

Drift across a shift points at wear, heat, or the condition of the end going into the form. Tooling and clamp die wear, hydraulic oil temperature climbing through the day, or an end finishing operation leaving an inconsistent end. A form can only be as consistent as the end it starts from.

The endform is splitting, wrinkling, or cracking

Usually the progression rather than the machine. Material moving further in one hit than it will tolerate, a material or heat treat change on the incoming tube, worn tooling geometry, or lubrication falling off. Same form, new material lot, is one of the most common versions of this call.

The machine is cycling slower than it used to

On hydraulic machines this is typically pressure, oil condition, or temperature. On servo machines it is more often a program or a mechanical drag that has been building for months. Either way, a machine that has quietly lost a second per cycle is losing you parts per shift.

It is throwing a fault we do not understand

Send us the fault, the machine model, and the serial number. On equipment we built, the control program and the print are on file, so a fault code is something we can look up rather than interpret. 

None of this needs to be diagnosed before you call. Describing what the machine is doing is enough.

How We Support the Machine

Three types of support, matched to what the machine actually needs. Most problems only need the first one.

Phone and Remote Troubleshooting

You describe the symptom to an engineer who knows the machine. Photographs, a video of the cycle, or a sample part move this along faster than a long description. A good share of calls end here, with a setting, an adjustment, a worn part identified, or a program version. Same day during business hours, and there is no charge to talk it through.

On-Site Service at Your Facility

When it needs hands and eyes on the machine, we deploy a technician to your plant with the machine history and prints in hand. Diagnosis, repair, tooling correction, and a written record of what was found and what was done, so the next person to open the machine is not starting over.

In-House Repair at Our Facility

Some machines are better fixed here. The machine ships to Wauseon and gets a full evaluation on our floor rather than a targeted repair, with the original prints and build records open. The cause is corrected, wear items and adjustments are handled in the same pass, and it is run off before it ships back. This is the right call when a problem keeps returning, when the machine has aged past a single failure, or when the repair needs equipment your maintenance shop does not have.

You do not have to pick. Describe what the machine is doing and we will tell you which of the three it needs, and we will say so if the answer is the cheapest one.

What this looks like in practice

A customer called in with a machine down and a diagnosis of their own. We talked it through, gave them the fix, and the machine ran. A couple of weeks later it stopped again. We sent a technician, who repaired what the machine was showing, and it ran again. Then it stopped a third time. At that point the pattern was the answer. The symptom was real, but it was not the cause. The machine shipped back to Wauseon for a full evaluation instead of another targeted repair, was repaired and tuned, and was back on their floor and producing in time to hit the deadlines that mattered to them. That is why we now say plainly that a repeat failure is the point to bring the machine here rather than fix the same symptom again.

Everything above is what happens after the machine stops. Production support is the work that means it stops less. It is scheduled rather than reactive, and it is where the machine history we keep starts paying you back.

Wauseon TubeTech machines are built to last decades, and so is our commitment to support them. Six stages cover the whole arc, from the first look at your part to supplying finished parts years later. Not every project uses all six, and plenty of customers join partway through.

Can I call and talk to someone who knows the machine?

Yes, and that is the intended first step. The engineers on the phone are the people who design these machines and develop the forming tooling, not a scripted service desk. A good share of calls end with a setting, a sensor, a worn tooling detail, or a program version rather than a service visit.

Why is my endformer tooling slipping?

Slip usually traces back to clamp force, die condition, or lubrication rather than the forming tooling itself. Worn or polished clamp dies, low clamp pressure, a contaminated tube surface, or a wall thickness change in the incoming tube will all let the tube move under the ram. If the form has also started drifting dimensionally, those two symptoms are almost always the same root cause.

Why is the servo on my endformer faulting?

Can the machine be repaired at your facility instead?

Yes. When a problem keeps coming back, or when the machine needs more than a repair, bringing it here is often the faster path. It gets a full evaluation on our floor with the original prints available, the repair is made, wear items and adjustments are addressed in the same pass, and it is run off before it ships back.

Do you service machines built by other manufacturers?

Yes. We service, maintain, and repair tube forming equipment we did not build. The print is not ours in those cases, so send the machine nameplate and a description of the problem and we will tell you what we can do before anyone travels.

What is the difference between maintenance and repair?

Maintenance is scheduled work done while the machine still runs, aimed at finding wear before it stops you. Repair is work done because something already failed. The point of the first is to buy less of the second.

Can you upgrade the machine while you have it?

If the work changes what the machine can do, that is a retrofit rather than a repair, and it is handled through process upgrades and retrofits. Obsolete controls, added automation, and capability changes fall on that side of the line. We will tell you which conversation you are actually in.
